Does Rainbow PDF uses printer sub system and hence the spool?

No, Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter (SBC) is not a printer driver. SBC does not use the printer spool for
converting documents, however you could send the result of the conversion directly to a printer connected to
the system, in which case the output of SBC would be added to the spool.

Is MS Office installation in the server (where Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter is installed) a must for the conversion of MS Office documents to PDF?

Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter uses our own independent rendering engine for converting MS Office
documents. We do not rely on MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, or any other third party tools for the rendering or
conversion process.

Does the bandwidth i.e. the performance of Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter increase if the hardware of the server is upgraded ?

Yes, SBC is a very CPU intensive application. In our internal testing we have found that for most documents
the performance scales linearly with the speed of the processor. It is important to note that SBC is
single-threaded, so for a single conversion the speed of each processor core is more important than the
number of cores. However, SBC is thread-safe, so you could improve the throughput for multiple documents by
running multiple instances of SBC on a multi-processor or multi-core system.

Does Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter run as a service?

SBC can be run as a command-line utility or called through one of the programming APIs. It does not run as a
service, but it could be developed into a service. (We do have customers who use it as a service.)

I tried to convert a PDF document and it throws error saying “Server was unable to process request. —> PDF output error. (3334) Restricted PDF can't be imported”, but another PDF document got converted. Could you please explain the root cause of the error ?

All Rainbow PDF products are designed to honor the security features present in the input documents.
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs or Word documents will not be automatically converted. The encryption
or password-protection must first be removed from the input document.

Does any version of Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter supports 64 bit Windows environment?

Currently we do not have a 64-bit Windows build of Server Based Converter. It is our understanding that the
primary advantage of 64-bit applications is the ability to address larger amounts of system memory. For
Server Based Converter, system memory is rarely a bottleneck. MS Office is not capable of opening or
creating documents large enough that they would require more than 2GB of RAM to convert. In a recent test,
even with 5 concurrent instances of SBC the total amount of RAM that was consumed was below 1.5GB.

What is the conversion speed of Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter?

Exact rates are difficult to predict. It depends on the complexity of the document. Additionally, the type of environment in which our software operates can greatly affect conversion speeds. That being said ….the time it takes to convert a page is generally less than a second.

However, we always recommend evaluating our software using your own documents, in your own environment to accurately predict conversion times.

Does Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter support Open Office?

Open Office is now supported

Can Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter add a Watermark to my PDF?

The Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter program does not have a feature to add watermarks. We have one product that can accomplish this task in a Windows environment.

If you only occasionally need to add a watermark and therefore output speed and capacity are not critical there is an inexpensive alternative. Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter allows the converted files to be outputted directly to a printer instead of to a file and our $20 Rainbow PDF Print Driver supports a watermark feature.

By installing our Rainbow PDF Print Driver and configuring it with the watermark you wish to display you can have our server side converter output to the printer device created by the print driver which, in turn, will output PDF files with the watermark.

How do I place an order for Rainbow PDF Server Based Converter?

Please complete the purchase form. Within 2 business days Antenna House will send a license key to you via secure email with instructions for installation. The license key will remove the watermark, time constraints and enable the full version of the software.

To download an evaluation copy, go to download the trial version of the software.

Do you provide programming samples?

Yes. In the Windows, Linux, and Solaris versions samples can be found in the program directories. Windows users: “C:\Program Files\Antenna\ServerBasedConverterV2\samples\”
